What is the LinguistIC Kangaroo contest?
The Linguistic Kangaroo is a global competition for students aged 9-19. The Linguistic Kangaroo Contest can be organized for various foreign languages (e.g.: English, French, German), and for the students’ respective mother tongues’ or ‘national language’. The ILK contest consists of a test containing a list of 30 to 50 questions.
Who can participate?
A student should be between ages 9 – 19 to participate in the Linguistic Kangaroo contest. All students who have sufficient command over a foreign language are invited to participate. “Kangaroo” would like to help you unlock your potential and skills through various challenges.
Which languages does the Kangaroo contest cover?
Depending on partners’ requirements, the Kangaroo contest can cover:
- English
- French
- German
- Stories and questions in mother tongue.
Can I Enter for the ILK Contest in my Area?
If your school wishes to participate and there is currently no suitable venue please contact the ILK country partner to discuss the possibility of creating additional venues.
Do I Need To Prepare For the Contest?
Your teacher knows your level and will enter you for the level you are currently at. There is no need to prepare specifically for the contest; the contest only requires you to complete tasks which you already do in class or tasks you are familiar with.
How Do I Decide Which Level Is Best for Me?
Your teacher will advise you which level is the most appropriate for you but remember that it is important to enter for the level which you are currently at.
Can I Enter for a Level Lower than My Current Level?
Yes, you can, but pay attention to the rules of each competition, so as to not lose points.
If My Language Level Is Good, Can I Enter for a Higher Level?
Yes, you can enter for a level higher but it is advisable to consult your teacher before making a decision.
Can I See Sample Contest Papers?
Sample Papers are available in the RESOURCES section on this site. You can also request them from your local ILK contest country partner.
What is the format of the test?
The test is in the multiple-choice format. Read and follow the instructions in the question booklet and select the appropriate option in the answer sheet for the corresponding question. Participants fill in their answers on the OMR answer sheet. You have 60 minutes to complete the test.
How do I get my results?
Results are available from the ILK partner in your country. The ILK country partner will inform schools and contestants and may make the results available on the local ILK web site.
